Although it would be ludicrous to suggest that this is the last word on the subject, however, it is true that the author has studied the Maori art most of his long life by examining and verifying the various comments and interpretations offered by other experts in the books, magazines and newspapers, not only on Maori art “in itself” but its place in the broad area of Pacific art. Its own contribution to the literature on Maori art is great, lively and controversial. His latest book is a collection of his work life with the study design and style is lucid and practical. The illustrations, of which there are hundreds, mainly photographs and placed next to the appropriate text.

The range of topics is complete meeting houses and war canoes personal ornaments including weapons, treasure boxes, burial boxes, musical instruments, coats using a variety of materials, wood easily achievable frame, linen, bone and ivory whale any green stone, clay and basalt handy.

Sir Gilbert has always been interested in men behind the art but also different “schools”, tribal and regional influences, how the recurring themes throughout the extent of the three-dimensional or tactile arts.

Generally Maori art has been, and remains largely a shape and design issue rather than color so that the illustrations are mostly monochrome but with enough color to bring out the few basic colors available, or the particular richness of stones.

Compendieuse the nature of the work also explains the inclusion in the title of “whaowhia” which could be translated as “packed“.
