Description

Victor Segalen (1878-1919) arrived in the Marquesas Islands in 1903, shortly after the death of Gauguin, and moved into the now empty box of the artist. The discovery of an exotic world and devoid of any connection with the old world proved decisive on the literary career of the young man who published in 1907 Immémoriaux. First novel written by a European, and giving voice and the role of the hero an indigenous, the work also had the immense originality to raise the issue of declining crop and non-European traditions as a result of colonization, while promoting the so-called exotic cultures. at the time considered revolutionary, the point of view of Segalen was just a harbinger of our current vision. This book combines evidence relating to the life and work of Victor Segalen writing, art Polynesian and European works in connection with Polynesia as it was lived by the discoverers of the time.
