The art of sub-Saharan Africa has a long history, but it is difficult to reconstruct accurately: many creations, wood or clay, have indeed left no trace and archaeological excavations, which could enrich our knowledge, still a rarity. Nevertheless, the works that have survived are numerous. Statues of figures of ancestors or deities, ceremonial masks, everyday objects, jewelery, furniture and textiles are represented in this book showing a wide variety of traditions. Mainly dating from the last hundred and fifty years, they show a wide variety of artistic traditions that can be traced to large historical-geographical areas and different ethnic and tribal groups. Are successively treated the arts from the coast and the western savannah (current Liberia, Guinea, Sierra Leone and Ivory Coast, people Bambara, Mossi, Gourma, Bobo, Dogon, Senufo), Côte-de-l Gold and Nigerian area (Yoruba and Ibo) of Grassland and Gabon, the Congolese area art Akan (Ashanti ethnic groups, Fanti, Baule, Anyi Abron and between Ghana and Ivory Coast) before finishing with the art of Eastern and Southern Africa. The developed legends to understanding the meaning of the most important objects. A chronology, a specific evoked styles and a box on the links between art and religion complete this panorama.
