Description

As the Gorgon Medusa, whose head separated from the body retained the power to mesmerize those who watched, African sculptures and masks detached from their context continue to fascinate us. This catalog showcases a hundred major pieces of the African collection of the Ethnography Museum of Geneva to introduce readers to the enchantment of sculpture and African masks. These works were not intended to represent but to act on the world and people when they were involved in rituals, initiation, religious or therapeutic. Surrounded by secrecy and made with exceptional mastery of materials, sculptures and masks appeared to outsiders in complex and impressive dramaturgy. The author, Boris Wastiau, review the elements of sculpture, materials and colors, before turning on the symbolism, the representation of the human body, animals and chimeras and finally, ritual uses.
