Description

Cover: This sensitive head Fang is a masterful interpretation of the tender mind of a young girl. The exaggeration of the egg-shaped head and eyes wide open, is cleverly manipulated against the simplified plans hair braids. The whole impression is of a poem by the instinctive innocence waiting at the threshold of consciousness itself. The interest of the editor in African sculpture was inspired, in the first case, there thirty years by several of his friends, Dr. JB Danquash, Jomo Kenyatta, George Padmore, Paul Robeson, Miss Nancy Cunard. Since then the advice of the French poet and critic, Mr. Tristan Tzara were freely used. We thank these talented experts to make this possible first compilation of African sculpture in India. African reappearance is more intense today, in many ways, the Asian renaissance. The contact points between the two were only weakly apprehended. The best examples of African sculpture, reproduced here, can stimulate an appreciation and deeper understanding of our parents past civilizations. As pioneering effort in the treatment of a region previously unknown culture in Asia, we do not necessarily cover all the different varieties, but only distinguished representative pieces of some tribal cultures. MARG also gratefully acknowledges the generous support given by the various museums in Europe and America in the loan photographs.
