Description

The Arts Igala, of Idioma and Tiv, these peoples settled in the state of Benue in Nigeria, are presented here for the first time. Art historian, the author attempts to place art forms in the workshops which they were born and workshops in styles. Iconographic which most are unpublished illustrations brings together the most representative objects of great museological institutions in the world and private collections. In Igala arts, one can distinguish the royal masks that are placed in their religious and political context and styles of Ankpa and Dekina. As for Idioma, they influenced the art of neighboring societies and suffered various influences but the originality of their full rest. The arrival of the Tiv completely disrupts the relationship between the cultures of the region. Tiv have a strong sense of identity and at the same time they give considerable space to witchcraft. Their statuary and art relate to both the concept of ethnic identity through eg. the bonds of marriage and witchcraft. This book on the arts of the Benue is a further contribution to the knowledge of prestigious arts of Nigeria.
