Description
This work, considered fundamental by specialists, had never been translated into French. The German edition (Munich, 1929), led to very few copies, was not found today. The French translation that took several years to two experts was made at the initiative of Mr. Christian Kaufmann, then in charge of Pacific-Oceania collections at the museum in Basel. This translation was carried out by two Germanic scholars Caledonian things Raymond Ammann and Bernard Gasser. The text is enriched with hundreds of notes and boasts an updated bibliography. We reproduce color atlas of 73 boards (nearly 700 objects). We add to the original book a list of current pictures of objects that were in the French museum collections before 1920 and Fritz Sarasin knew. In preparation for his book, Fritz Sarasin visited eleven of the richest European ethnographic museums: Berlin, Cambridge, Dresden, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Munich, Paris, Rome, Stuttgart, Vienna and Zurich. He also studied Kanak collections in three French regional museums: Bordeaux, La Rochelle, Toulouse, as well as the private collection of the Governor Bouge. It was thus, in his time, one of the few bother to confront his personal collection to those museums held. Thus bringing a significant corpus study, he could, by a working approximation and comparison, complement its typologies and propose hypotheses that the only consideration of its own collection, despite its great diversity, would not have allowed. This is the reference book on Kanak culture which by its rich iconography and the accuracy of the text enthrall as the lover of objects that the researcher.
