Placate the spirits dance explores the relationship between social life and artistic expression since the nineteenth century in one of the major producing areas of art from Papua New Guinea. This book offers a rich and stunning presentation boards ancestor, masks, drums, skull door, and personal items carved and painted by hand and an overview of those who make them, illustrated with 153 photographs archive color. Each company on the Gulf of Papua had its own traditions developed to sculpt, paint or decorate masks, panels and hand drums that filled the houses of men for use in dances and performances. Today, these artifacts offer a glimpse into the various cosmologies and ritual lives of these various companies before being surprisingly significantly changed by their contact with the West.
