Description

In Africa, nothing is too trivial or too trivial, everything can be material to a creative process. This superb reference book, profusely illustrated, reproduced and described 506 weapons in Central Africa whose elegant forms is matched only by the variety and chance to find the perfect balance between form and a multitude of specific contingencies including the environment in which these weapons are used. That is, if the weapons are primarily functional. Another major attraction, the exhibition “Fatal Beauty – Weapons of Central Africa shows that in Africa, killing or wounding are not the sole purposes of a weapon. Besides traditional offensive and defensive weapons, we encounter, in fact, a series of specimens having the function of badge of dignity or exchange object. As was often the case elsewhere, the arrival of the white conqueror dealt the final blow to traditional African weapons. Our regret is great to have only fragmentary information on the origin, function, or the indigenous name of arms. Often remain only the attributes of leaders, splendid silent witnesses of another age. This exhibition seeks to illustrate widely weapons in Central Africa, in all forms, given the available material. The desire to emphasize the artistic quality of the equipment exhibited also explains the lack of “real” usual weapons, exposing officials do not also have to pretend to be exhaustive. The exhibition and its accompanying catalog will contribute to a better knowledge and thus to a better understanding of the African man.
